Old Mission Peninsula Residence

Traverse City, Michigan

The residence is nestled in 40 acres of mature hardwoods and pines just north of Bowers Harbor on Old Mission Peninsula. The owner wanted a house that “grows” out of the forest.  The architecture had to use natural materials, traditional forms and open living spaces that brought the family together. No extraneous detailing or fussiness was allowed. Only clearly defined spaces and open rooms for ventilation and day lighting.

This 3,000 square foot structure included four upper level bedrooms. These spaces of high-pitched ceilings of tongue and grove pine echo the natural surroundings. The main level open living, dining and kitchen areas focus on the communal eating space, and provides views of the backyard woodlot.

An enclosed screened-in sleeping porch is accessed through this main level open space and provides a direct connection to the outdoors. The living room stone fireplace and hearth creates warmth and comfort. Warm exterior cedar siding, shake and trim echo and compliment its natural surroundings. This architecture of complement, not overpowering its surroundings, makes this a magical sense of place.
