Traverse City Residence

Old Mission Peninsula, Traverse City, Michigan

This two story historic farmhouse on Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City was completely gutted to the wood framing and renovated into a Bed & Breakfast facility. The existing “L” shaped plan was expanded to the north with new library/ study, mudroom, and bathroom space. The existing living, dining and kitchen walls were not removed in order to enhance and retain the “parlor” effect of these charming spaces. Beautifully detailed existing stair rail systems, door and window trim, and base moldings were salvaged and reused in the building. New insulation and wiring was added in all existing stud spaces. A covered veranda porch with tapered craftsman style columns was added to provide the occupants with expansive views of Grand Traverse Bay, farmlands and orchards. The upper level was renovated to accommodate three bedrooms and private baths for guests. Shed roof dormers were used in the design in these rooms for views and cross ventilation. Slim horizontal lap siding, crown molding at roof edges, cottage style windows with divided lightes on the upper sash, were all used to convey the Arts and Crafts Style architecture. The new symmetrical design of low-pitched porch roof, upper level gable end wall framing, and new metal roofing retained the agricultural vernacular of turn of the century farmhouses.
